How Can I keep a cat off a window sill??
Hi…trying to hide cats from my landlord who is staying in an apartment downstairs at the moment but the kitties keep jumping on the window sills! I bought a natural cat repellent from pet store yesterday but it didn’t work at all. Someone suggested cayenne pepper? Any other ideas?
To all of you people who want to judge rather than be helpful, we have just moved from a new country and are settling on the purchase of a new home…we took a temporary rental to avoid the cats having to be boarded for 2 months. I suppose you people would do the cruel thing and board them instead….to each their own, but I love them and didn’t want them to suffer like that.

Double sided tape. I bought citrus cat repellent because I heard cats hate citrus…yeah right…my cat’s love it.
Or you can spray them with water whenever you see them getting in the window sill.
New response here: Double Stick Tape: Cats dont like the feel of something sticky on thier paws. Plastic Bags on windowsill: Cats dont like plastic.
Try some orange peelings, cats don’t like the smell of citrus, and try getting some curtains that they can’t get behind, so your landlord can’t see them
does your landlord not let cats also? me too, but i’m going to get one! ahah
my caat kept jumping on the table , what i did is put packing tape on the table, and when he jumped up on there, the tape stuck to his paw. im sorry if this sounds harsh, but i took the tape off of his paw in about 5 minutes or so. he learned.
try double sided tape!
they don’t like the way it sticks to their paws!
You can get two-sided tape that’s meant to prevent cats from scratching items from Petsmart. We used to use it keep our cats off a small piece of furniture. Cats don’t like the stickiness, so they’ll avoid that area.
Cats also don’t like the feel or sound of aluminum foil. You can put that on your window sills and they’ll avoid them. I successfully used aluminum foil to keep one of our cats off a dresser where I had dried roses in a vase (he loved to chew and mess with them).
If you want cats, and I have three, it’s only right you seek a cat friendly place. Your landlord has every right to have a pet free building if he wants one.
It’s about impossible to hide a cat from a landlord. That being said, I used the spray bottle and several mouse traps placed UPSIDE down. Scares the h*l out of them when they go off.
Just Try to keep the cat in a room where the the landlord can’t find it until he leaves or let him stay with a friend until he leaves, and a cat won’t stay of a windowsil so no use in trying to keep it off. Good Luck! ; )
I agree, double sided tape works well as well as a spray bottle with water in it, just give the cat a little spray when they get up on the window sill.
Your landlord will eventually find out that you have a cat, if he needs to come in and repair something, or just comes up unannounced to ask a question he could notice the cat hairs and well make an educated guess. My landlord allows small animals but we have to pay a deposit.
put something on the windowsill that they cant knock over.
Why do u have cats when the land lord doesn’t want them? The only thing I can think of is to get a heating pad to attract the cats to that. Good luck.
get a dog
Sit by the wonpw fpr an hour or so. Whenever the kitties jump up there, spray them with some water in a squirt bottle (Put it on mist so you don’t get their eyes or ears). After that, just put the bottle on the window sill. They’ll see it a remember being squirted.
I would find another place to live. Kitties should be able to sit on the windowsill–views of the world outside is like kitty TV. Or, if your lease allows it, you could always buy stuff for your windows so kitty can see out but your landlord can’t see in.
The double stick tape, or just the plain clear packing tape (NOT duct tape) laid sticky side up in 10" long strips on the sill. The cats won’t like the sticky on their paws and will leave the sills alone.
I’ve never knows the cat repellants to work all that well. Pepper isn’t much of an option, it’d be too damaging to their eyes and breathing.
Try the tape. It should be the 2" wide stuff. It’s worked well for us with several cats who all needed to know what was ‘safe’ to go on in the apartment. It kept them off the top of the aquarium, the top of the book case, the computer monitor, the edge of the stove, etc.
